Active Reading

What does it mean?

Active Reading simply means being actively involved with the text while reading. In other words, thinking while reading. It also involves marking up the text when possible. For example, students are encouraged to read a paragraph and then go back and underline important words. They may also write a topic or main idea in the margin. In addition, students may write questions they have and circle unknown words/phrases and guess at their meaning (using context clues). These skills are especially helpful in test taking situations, but should always be encouraged to help students monitor their understanding. Reading is comprehending!
